Building a web site - Structure

A well planned structure will mean a good experience for your visitors.

Most sites start with a home page
Most home pages are more like an introduction and table of contents in a magazine than a magazine cover. Visitors should immediately learn what the site is about and what it's offering them.

The importance of good navigation
  • Good navigation is key to giving your visitors good experience
  • Your site should be structured in a logical way
  • The navigation should be consistent from page to page
  • Lead your visitors to the information they want with the fewest clicks possible.

Use sections
Any site more than a few pages long needs sections. Think of them like chapters in a book, their purpose is to organise articles into logical units.

Sections and their titles are very important because they tell your site visitors what kind of information you're going to give them.

Long pages or short pages?
Studies have shown that web site visitors do scroll and that the more information you give them the better.  Rather than being overwhelmed, you make it easier for them to find something that interests them.
  • If people are interested, they will scroll
  • If they're not, it doesn't matter how long or short your page is
  • It's still a good idea to put your most important topics at the top of the page  so they're not overlooked.
